Chinese Government Scholarship

Graduate Scholarships for International Students - International College Zhejiang University

I. Basic Information on the Scholarships

The scholarships are provided by the Chinese Government and Zhejiang University jointly for prospective international students to study for Ph.D. Degrees at Zhejiang University.

  1. 60 scholarship students will be accepted for the fall semester of 2008 and spring semester of 2009;
  2. Details: Awardees will be exempt from tuition and fees for registration, laboratory experiments, internship, basic learning materials, and intramural accommodation;
    • Living allowance: CNY 1,400 per month for doctoral students;
    • Fee for outpatient medical services and Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China: CNY 600 per person per annum;
    • A one-off settlement subsidy for new students after registration: CNY 600 per person.

  4. The duration of the scholarship for all programs with English as the media of instruction is the same as the normal length of the specific programs.

II. An Overview of Zhejiang University:

Zhejiang University is located in the coastal city of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, which lies 180 km away from Shanghai, a metropolitan city in China. As one of the China's Seven ancient capitals, Hangzhou is a world-famous tourist resort praised as "a paradise on earth", boasting very favorable natural conditions, with a mild climate, convenient transportation systems, picturesque scenery and rich cultural heritage.

The university is one of the few top-ranking research institutions of higher learning in China. It has a full coverage of disciplines in 11 major branches of Learning, Namely Philosophy, Literature, History, Education, Sciences, Economics, Law, Management, Engineering, Agriculture and Medicine. With a history of more than 80 years of graduate education, the university now offers 331 academic and professional Master's Degree programs and 283 Doctoral programs. Under its administration there are 14 Nation Key Laboratories, 2 National Engineering Research Centers and 3 National Engineering Technology Centers and 43 post-doctor stations. At present, the university has a full-time student body of over 39,000, with 22,900 undergraduates, over 15,700 Master's Degree students and over 6,600 Ph.D. candidates, and the university also has about 1,700 international students coming from over 100 countries.

III. Application

Eligibility

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals and in good health.
2. Applicants must have a Master's Degree.
3. Applicants must be under the age of 40.
4. Applicants should have a competitive academic record.
5. Applicants should have strong scientific research ability.
6. Applicants must NOT be beneficiaries of any other kinds of sponsorships.

Language Used in Teaching
English is used as instructional language for programs in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Economics, Business, and Medicines.

Application Materials
All applicants must fill in and provide the following materials truly and correctly.

  1. The Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (Download) in Chinese or in English.
  2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy). If applicants are university students or already employed, they should also provide documents of being university students or on-post employees. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.
  3. Applicants for doctoral studies need to provide notarized copies of their undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.
  4. A photocopy of the passport and a recent photo (white background, 35mm × 45mm in size).
  5. A study or research proposal in Chinese or in English (no less than 800 words).
  6. Two letters of recommendation from full professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English).
  7. Published academic papers or other academic achievements (if applicable).
  8. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (printed by Chinese quarantine authority. Applicants are expected to keep the original copies) filled in English. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. The medical examination results will be valid for 6 months. All applicants are kindly requested to take this factor into consideration as they plan to take the medical examination.

Applicants should submit the above materials to the International College of Zhejiang University before May 30, 2008 for the programs starting in fall 2008 and before Sept. 20 2008 for those starting in spring 2009. Application materials will NOT be returned regardless of the result of application.

Choices of Programs

Please check the Major Doctoral Programs. Applicants are encouraged to contact their prospective supervisors at Zhejiang University prior to application and are expected to enclose in their application package the relevant recommendation letters written by those supervisors.

Approval and Notification
Zhejiang University will review all the application materials. Decisions for admission and for granting the scholarships will be made on the basis of the applicants' competitiveness, academic and otherwise. The name list of the scholarship awardees for programs starting from the fall semester of 2008 will be publicized before July 31, 2008 after it is reviewed by China Scholarship Council. Admission Notices and other relevant documents will be sent to the awardees afterwards.

Note:
1. Awardees must go through the Annual Review of the Chinese Government Scholarship Status.
2. The duration of the "Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Zhejiang University for International Students" is not to be extended if the awardees fail to finish the studies due to personal reasons.
3. Scholarship students who have to suspend their studies because of illness should return to their home country for further treatment and rest. Expenses for the international travel to and from the university will be borne by the students themselves, and their scholarship status will be reserved for one year at most, with the monthly living allowance stopped during the suspension. Scholarships of the students who suspend their studies for reasons other than illness will not be reserved.

KOREAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP –2008

Applications are invited from Indian nationals on plain paper in the format given below for the award of 29 scholarships to Indian students offered by the Government of Republic of Korea, at Master’s level, Ph. D. level & one year research programme. The subjects in which scholarships will be awarded are given below:

i) Bio-technology
ii) Environment Science
iii) Molecular Biology
iv) Computer Application.
v) Architecture
vi) Agronomy
vii) Information Technology
viii) Korean Language & Literature
ix) International Co-operation *

2. Age: Not exceeding 40 years for Master’s & Ph.D. respectively as on 1-9-2008. No age limit for research programme.

3. Qualification: Applicants must have already earned or expected to receive: (a) a bachelor’s degree or equivalent prior to August 31, 2008, in order to apply for Master’s Programme; (b) a Master’s degree prior to August 31, 2008 in order to apply for an advanced programme (doctoral degree; Ph.D) (c) For research programme , applicants should submit an official invitation letter from any Korean universities, institutions or organizations.
* This subject can be Studied in English.


Note: Candidates who have received Korean Scholarship at any time are not eligible.

4. Duration:

o Master’s degree programme: About 2 years (excluding a 1 year Korean Language course)
o Ph.D. programme: About 3 years (excluding a 1 year Korean Language course)


5. Airfare: The awardee will be paid an economy class ticket airfare to the Republic of Korea, and thereafter, a return ticket of the same category to his or her country of residence after the completion of a study programme.

6. Value of Scholarship:

(i) Monthly Allowance: Upon arrival and registration at National Institute for International Education Development (NIIED) , the awardee will be provided with 900,000 won per month to cover living expenses for the period of his or her programme.

(ii) Tuition Fees: Scholars under the auspices of Korean Government are subject for a tuition waiver: full tuition fee is exempted by the Government and the full entrance fee is exempted by the host institution.

(iii) Research Allowance( Additional Payment): Includes costs for textbooks and other literature, student association membership, dissertation review, and so on; it is only granted to those who take a degree course or a research course.
Humanities: 210,000 won per semester
Natural Sciences, Arts or Physical Education: 240,000 won per semester

(iv) Settlement Allowance: An awardee will be paid 200,000 won upon arrival.

(v) Repatriation Allowance: An awardee will be paid 100,000 won upon completion of studies.

(vi) Language Training Expenses: the NIIED will pay the entrusted language training institution the full cost up to 1 year.

(vii) Dissertation Printing Costs: Up to 500,000 won will be reimbursed for the costs related to a dissertation printing .

(viii) Medical Insurance: The awardees will be provided with a health insurance during the period of their study programme in the Republic of Korea. They will be reimbursed against direct payments for the major accidents and illnesses. The NIIED will assist the awardee in finding out what cases are covered by the insurance.

Japanese Government monbukagakusho mext Scholarship-2009

Applications are invited on plain paper from Indian nationals residing in India for the award of 35 scholarships for “Research Studies/Ph.D” offered by the Government of Japan for the year 2009. No scholarship will be offered for Post Doctoral studies (After Ph.D or at final stages of Ph.D). About two or three scholarships are reserved for Japanese Language and Japanese Studies. The subjects in which scholarships will be awarded are given below:

Research studies (Ph.D)

1) Information Technology (2) Optical Fibre Communication (3) Quality and Reliability Engineering (As applied to various systems like Electricity & Power, Railways, Heavy Industry, Heavy Electronics) (4) Electronics & Communication (5) Robotics (6) Laser Technology (7) Bio-technology (8) Japanese Language and Literature (9) Fisheries (10) Japanese Studies (11) Earthquake Engineering (12) Environmental Science (13) Architecture (14) Aerospace Engineering (15) Material Science/Engineering.

DURATION: About two years .

VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP: Maintenance allowance of 170,000 Yen monthly and 160,000 Yen in and after the thirteenth month of stay in Japan( subject to change, however, depending upon the annual budget of each year), tuition and examination fees exempted. Accommodation will be arranged.

PASSAGE COST: Economy class air-ticket from India to Japan and back will be provided by the Japanese Government.

AGE LIMIT: Applicant must have been born on or after April 2, 1974 ( Below 35 years as on 1st April, 2009).

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS:

i) Japanese Language:

a) Students who are enrolled in the Post Graduate Degree course in Japanese Language from a recognized university.


OR

b) Students who have completed undergraduate Degree Course in Japanese Language from a recognized university.

OR

c) Students who have completed undergraduate degree course in any subject from recognized university with 50% or above marks and who have completed Level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) conducted by Japan Foundation and have completed at least 3 years of Japanese Language study from a recognized university/institute in India.

ii) Japanese Studies:


Masters Degree in the relevant field with minimum 60% marks.
